A new Water ATM was inaugurated today at Thoubal Wangmataba, by Leishangthem Bira, the project is an initiative led by DLM under the guidance of the Public Health Engineering Department (PHED), Manipur. The facility aims to provide safe, affordable, and easily accessible drinking water to the community.
With this installation, residents of Wangmataba and nearby areas can now access 20 litres of purified water at a minimal cost, much lower than the price of bottled water in the market. This will help reduce the monthly household expenditure on drinking water while ensuring that families receive clean and reliable water every day.
The Water ATM is equipped with modern purification technology to eliminate contaminants, thereby playing a key role in preventing waterborne diseases such as diarrhoea, typhoid, and cholera. By reducing dependence on unsafe water sources and costly bottled alternatives, the project directly contributes to better public health and improved financial savings for households.
The Wangmataba Youth Club, entrusted with the caretaker role, will manage the unit and ensure smooth day-to-day operations. This community-led model not only strengthens local ownership but also creates livelihood opportunities at the grassroots level.
The inauguration marks an important step toward achieving universal access to safe drinking water in Manipur, and serves as an example of how community-driven initiatives under PHED can bring sustainable change to people’s lives.
